North Routt Wheeler Barn
The Wheeler Barn sitting at mile 8.5 on County Road 129 in North Routt has drawn my attention for many years. It sits in the middle of the Elk River Valley and was built in the early 1900’s.
The painting is a view seen from the road, but if it’s viewed from the side it’s age becomes more apparent. The style of the barn construction is one where there are 2 buildings built with a connecting covered passage between them.
This barn is typical of a style called a double crib barn, typical of barns built in the mountain areas of Appalachia in the late 1700s early 1800s. Perhaps the settlers who built the barn on Elk River road originally came from there. To my knowledge, this barn is the only double crib barn I am aware of in Routt County.
This painting is framed and matted.
