Great Blue Heron Rookery
Watercolor and collage painting of a Great Blue Heron Rookery located on the Labyrinth section of the Green River just outside of Canyonlands National Park.
A “rookery” is a colony of nests. Great Blue Herons gather in large colonies each spring, building their nests in the safety of the tree tops. In this way, they can work together to monitor predators such as eagles and owls from above and racoons from below.
My husband and I came across this “rookery” while paddling through Labyrinth Canyon on the Green River in April a few years ago. The next year when we passed by the same spot the rookery site was deserted.
I captured this sighting of the rookery through photographs and used rice paper collage over the watercolor to give the nest a three-dimensional feel.
This piece is a giclee print on watercolor paper and I have applied the same collage effect of rice paper over the nest to give it a 3-dimensional effect.
This painting is beautifully framed and matted. Size 26″x15″.
